This is a mass in a pure Congolese style without any influence of European rnusic. The Kyrie and the Credo

are wholly elaborated like the "kasalas" which are still.performed according to the Ngandanjika (Kasai); the

Sanctus and the Benedictus were inspired by a magnificent "Parting-song in Kiluba." The Gloria is improvised

in the typical Kiluba-style of the Katanga.The Hosannah, however, is a genuine rhythrnic dance of

the Kasai, and the Agnus Dei is a typical Bena Lulua (Luluabourg) sang.

The rnusic was not written. The whole rnass is the result of general cooperation and of a spontaneous inspiration.

In the Credo the interpretation of the "Crucifixus" in particular is really remarkable. The text (the crucifixion

and the death of the Redeemer) is preceded by the usual announcernent of death, first on the Kyondo and then

on the Kikumvi (Tom-Tom). Then follows a genuine "kilio"(elegy - dead-song) without percussion accompaniment,

sung by the solo voice. The doleful tone is stressed by the repeated and sustained o-sounds ("... etiam pro

no ... bis, sub Pontio Pilato... ).

lt is perhaps difficult here for non-natives to feel the religious spirit; the Sanctus'and the Benedictus, however,

incite the Westerner too to prayer and devotion.The Missa Luba created by Baluba of the Kasai and

Katanga is a striking proof of the richness and beauty of Congolese music, a document of great value and a

magnificent testimony of the religious African soul. lt is sung here by the pure, fresh voices of a boys' choir

formed by Father Guido Haazen when he went to the Congo in 1953.

Die Original Missa Luba Aufnahme aus den fünfziger Jahren - erhältlich bei Tom's Recordland.

Der belgische Franziskanerpater Guido Haazen kam 1953 in den Kongo. Da ihn in seinem Wirkunskreis die ungewöhnliche grosse musikalische Begabung der Menschen stark beeindruckte, gründete er 1954 unter dem Titel "Troubadoure des Köngs Bauduoin" einen Chor mit Schlagzeugorchester, dem 45 Jungen im Alter von 9 bis 14 Jahren sowie 14 Lehrkräfte der Zentralschule in Kamina angehörten. Begeisterte Anerkennung fand der Chor 1958 auf einer sechsmonatigen Europa-Tournee.

In der Original "Missa Luba" werden die Ordinariumsteile der heiligen Messe in verschiedenen Stilarten einheimischer Musik gestaltet. Die musikalische Gestaltung, die häufigen polyphonen Elemente, die rhythmische Bearbeitung sind allein das Ergebnis spontaner, wechselseitiger Inspiration der Mitwirkenden.

Die Missa Luba offenbart eine tiefe religiöse wie auch musikalische Kraft, deren unittelbare Spontaneität sich niemand zu entziehen vermag. Sie ist ein getreues Abbild der reichen Vielfalt kongolesischer Volksmusik.
